According to the roofing experts, fall has been deemed the best time to conduct roof replacements. Fall presents many benefits that aren’t found in the other seasons. These include mild temperatures, more predictable weather, and less moisture. With the harsh winter months just around the corner—make sure your roof is ready to endure the heavy moisture!

Why Fail Is The Best Time to Replace Your Roof

For starters, the mild weather takes a lot of stress and strain off of the roofers who are replacing your roof. They can work more efficiently without worrying about heat exhaustion and other heat-related concerns.

Fall is usually a drier time as well—especially in the Northern Nevada climate. Less moisture and consistent mild weather make it much easier to schedule your roof replacement without having to constantly check the weather for any rogue storms coming out of the Sierra Mountains.

In regards to the technical aspects of roof replacements, the cooler weather will help the shingles also stay at a reasonable temperature for installation. When it is too hot, the shingles soften, making them difficult to work with. The weather is also warm enough to properly seal the shingles quickly after the roof is complete.

Lastly, with winter looming around the corner, it’s smart to ensure that your roof will make it through the unpredictable Northern Nevada winters. Even small issues can be amplified causing structural damage, trigger leaks, and other moisture-related problems. The last thing you want is to wake up on Christmas morning with a leaky roof!

Damages That May Occur Due to High Temperatures

When your roof gets too hot, there are all kinds of things that can go wrong. Not only will your shingles be affected, but the roof decking, attic, and interior of your home may also suffer damage caused by the sun. See what risks your roof may face this summer:

Roof Decking Damage

Your roof decking is supposed to provide an extra layer of protection to your roof, but it isn’t indestructible. Excessive exposure to water and moisture can cause the wood material of the roof decking to rot and warp. This, combined with the rising temperatures of summer and poor attic ventilation can lead to further damage. If your attic is improperly ventilated it will likely overheat which often results in the development of condensation causing the roof decking to rot. So, be sure to check for any leaks in the roof or surrounding areas and have your attic inspected by a licensed roofing contraction for proper ventilation.

Moss and Mold Damage

Moss and mold thrive in a wet and hot environment which makes your roof the ideal spot for moss and mold to grow. Not only are moss and mold unappealing aesthetically, but they can also cause severe damage to your home and even your health. While moss tends to grow on the outside of your home, usually in between shingles or on top of them, mold can easily find its way to the inside of your roof. This generally causes damage to the wood and can affect the entire structure of your home. To keep you and your family healthy and safe, hire a trusted roofing company to assess your roof and have them make any necessary repairs as soon as possible.

Cracked, Uneven, and Warped Shingles

Shingles are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and climates, but this doesn’t make them completely safe from damage. Extreme heat can cause shingles to dry out and become very brittle. This can change the shape of the shingles, making them curl or bubble, and could even cause them to crack and deteriorate. Roofing shingles generally have a long life span, but extreme weather conditions can cause serious damage to shingles.

Cracked Concrete Tiles

If you have a tile roof, you probably have noticed a few cracked tiles here and there. Although tile is meant to withstand the heat (making it great for places like Arizona), it does not do well with both extreme heat and cold. Between our hot summers and cold winters, tile expands and contracts more than it was meant to and eventually cracks. Now that the weather is nice, it is a good time to evaluate what type of roofing material best suits your needs, your tastes, and the weather. We are more than happy to give you a free satellite estimate for asphalt shingles, even if you just need a price to weigh out your options.

Installing a new roof is no easy task, and not everyone is up for the challenge. Often, roof shingles can pose problems of their own which makes the process even more difficult. For example, shingles that appear bumpy or seem indented may be faulty or they may just need time and warmth to settle. Regardless of this, hiring a credible, qualified professional roofing contractor can alleviate these concerns and hopefully prevent them from happening altogether. If you’re in need of a roof replacement, contact the expert roofers at East Fork Roofing. And if you’re unsure about the condition of your roof, or need help identifying your issue, keep reading to see why your roof shingles aren’t flattening.

Roof Shingle Bundle Distortion

Shingle bundle distortion is a fairly common occurrence that can cause shingles to not lay flat after installation. But, what causes shingle bundle distortion? Well, shingles are made of asphalt, which is a naturally malleable substance. As such, they commonly become distorted due to the way they sit while being stored and transferred. Sometimes the wood pallet that the shingle bundles sit on will affect the form and shape of the shingles themselves. Often, shingles will conform to the shape of whatever is underneath them, and if the surface isn’t completely flat, this could lead to bumps and dips in the shingles. Fortunately, most shingles will correct themselves with warmth and time.

New Roof Shingles

If you’re finding an issue with your shingles and have recently had a complete roof replacement, then the issue may just be that your shingles are misshapen due to the way they were stored prior to installation. Usually, when this happens the shingles will become flexible once they get hot enough which will also allow the adhesive to bond the shingles in place. The heat from the sun will help soften and flatten the roof shingles, allowing them to form a permanent seal to the roofing materials underneath.

Some shingle distortions, however, are caused by faulty installation. If you happen to notice voids or gaps underneath the shingles after you’ve given them the chance to seal to the roof, then the problem may be related to faulty installation. For instance, if the shingles are incorrectly nailed to the roof, it can permit the beneath layer to slip. This often results in uneven shingle layering and ultimately, an uneven roof.

Existing Roof Shingles

While it isn’t recommended to install new shingles over old ones (you should always have the layers removed before installing new shingles on top), it’s still common for people to have this done due to costs and other resources. By doing this though, you run the risk of creating more problems for your roof and the new layer of shingles you plan to add to it. If the existing shingles do not lay flat, then your new layer won’t lay flat either. That’s because shingles are designed to conform to the surface beneath them. This can also prevent the new shingles from properly adhering to the existing roof layer, leaving bumps and bulges in your roof. To prevent this from happening, you should have all layers of the existing roof stripped so that the new layers can be properly installed.

Also, be sure to use quality roofing materials. Although the cost of some shingles may seem worth it, they can be much thinner and more susceptible to damage than higher quality materials. They may also lack a sufficient amount of adhesive which can prevent the shingles from sealing adequately.

prepare your roof for spring

The days are getting longer and the snow is starting to melt as springtime approaches in Northern Nevada. The harsh winter months may have caused some damage to your roof, so now is the perfect time to see how it held up and make some improvements. This blog will offer some insight into prepping your roof for Spring, and East Fork Roofing is here for all your Reno roofing needs!

1) Inspect

To start off, if possible, get up on your roof and see if there’s any visible damage. If it is not safe, most damage can be noticed from the ground. You’ll want to look out for broken or missing shingles, protrusions, significant shingle granules in the gutters or on the ground or anything else that looks unusual. A quick inspection can give you an idea of what you need to fix, and you can take care of those small issues before they become complicated and expensive.

2) Clean

During your inspection, you might notice some debris on the roof. A buildup of debris can cause damage and block water flow in your gutters as the Spring rain comes. Make sure your gutters are clear and remove all the tree limbs, leaves and nests. Blocked up gutters can cause stagnant water which can bring more damage and a greater possibility of mold.

3) Check the Ventilation

Another important aspect to your home is the ventilation. Moisture levels will rise in the Spring making ventilation much more important. Proper ventilation requires intake vents (usually soffit vents) and exhaust vents (the ones you see near the top of the roof). This helps ensure air is flowing through the attic and not blocking in heat and moisture. Check the intake vents, and make sure they are clear from debris. If you have an older home, keep in mind that you may need more exhaust vents than are currently on your roof. (To see a video about how ventilation works, click here.)

4) Review Important Documents

In the event where you do have a roofing problem, you’ll want to make sure you have all your insurance policies and warranties at the ready. If you’re not sure about your insurance or warranties it’s a good time to review them with an agent to ensure you have quality protection in case you do have a problem.

Energy efficiency has become a growing concern for homeowners. One of the most effective ways to improve this is by investing in energy-efficient roofing systems. Not only will an energy-efficient roof save you money on your electric bill, but it’s also beneficial for the environment as well. Check out the different ways you can enhance your roof, and improve your energy efficiency.

energy efficient roofing, roof replacement reno

Powered Roof Ventilation

Powered roof vents draw additional air through your attic space which reduces the amount of hot air that gets trapped in the attic. While it’s more common for homes in warmer climates to have these, homes in cold climates could also benefit from powered roof vents. Having proper attic ventilation will help make your roof system last longer and prevent further damage to framing and sheathing caused by moisture that naturally occurs in an attic. Letting hot, moist air remain in your attic can cause damage, and increasing the flow of air through the attic can help prevent this.

Other benefits of having proper attic ventilation are:

Radiant Heat Barriers

Radiant heat barriers can help reduce cooling costs by up to 10%. The barriers are installed in homes, typically in the attic, as a way to reduce heat from the sun and improve energy efficiency. The materials used to create the barriers are highly reflective which reflects heat and prevents it from being absorbed into your home. The radiant barriers are used to reduce radiant heat gain, unlike other techniques that work to slow the conductive heat flow.

Also, because heat is constantly moving from hot areas to cool areas, radiant heat barriers will prevent heat from transferring. This will allow the cool air to stay cool.

Additional Insulation energy efficient roofing, reno roof replacement

Energy-efficient roofing systems will be more effective if they are accompanied by additional insulation. Added attic insulation will help lower the reliance on using heating oil and natural gas to warm your home. This can help lower heating costs by 10-50%. Additional insulation can help control your home’s temperature and protect it from heat, cold, and humidity.

You would have to use a separate company to install extra insulation, but you can get this done at the same time as a Reno roof replacement.

Malarkey Shingles

Malarkey shingles are not only an option to enhance your home’s energy efficiency, but they are also environmentally friendly. These shingles are made from recycled materials some of their lines and contain granules that have been proven to reduce smog levels. Also, these shingles are available in a variety of colors, some of which are solar reflective. This is what makes them a more energy-efficient option in Reno roofing materials. Having solar reflective shingles will help reflect heat from the sun’s rays, and help keep your home cooler.

Other Energy-Efficient Roofing Materials

While having added insulation and powered roof vents will improve your energy efficiency, these alone may not be enough to prevent heat from penetrating through your roof. Installing a reflective rooftop is the most effective method for preventing excessive heat. You want to avoid allowing heat to get through your roof because it will warm up attics and top floors, causing your air conditioning unit to work much harder. Luckily, homeowners are able to choose more energy-efficient roofing materials on their own thanks to the federal ENERGY STAR program. ENERGY STAR labeled materials are highly solar reflective and have proven to be more effective than other types of roofing materials.

Are you struggling to figure out when the best time to replace a roof is? There are a few things to consider when deciding the right time for a Reno roof replacement. Is your roof in desperate need of repairs right away? What’s the weather like in your area during the different seasons? And, more importantly, when is your roofer going to be available to get the job done?

It’s critical that you plan a roof replacement according to your needs and availabilities. The best time to have your roof replaced really depends on you. It’s important that you plan ahead for this is a big job. You should get at least 3 quotes from different roofing Reno companies to ensure you get the best price possible. And while you’re calling around for estimates, be sure to ask about their availability and scheduling options. Here’s some more tips for choosing the best time to have your roof replaced:

Roof Replacements During the Spring

If you’re planning on having your roof replaced during the spring season, you should know that it’s best to schedule for this in the winter. Scheduling a roof replacement early on, before you plan on having the services done, will ensure that you can get a spot in the books and gives you adequate time to prepare yourself.

Many people start thinking about having their roof replaced in the spring. This is partially due to the weather change because it’s easier to perform maintenance on your home when the weather isn’t so frigid. But, it’s also because winter weather can be damaging to an older roof. This means repairs are more likely to be necessary following a heavy winter.

Reno Roof Replacement 620 Boulder Cir f East Fork Roofing Dayton

Spring is considered the best time for most areas of the U.S. to have a roof replaced because of the weather. Asphalt shingles require time to adhere to the roof and create a sealing that sets the shingles in place. It’s easiest for this to happen if it’s not too hot or cold out which is why spring is considered the best time to plan a roof replacement. There are still weather conditions to consider during the spring, such as rain, that can delay the process. As long as your roofing Reno contractor comes fully prepared this shouldn't be a problem, but it's still important to take this into consideration.

Another good reason to consider purchasing during winter and installing in spring is because some roofers offer lower pricing during the winter in an effort to keep everyone busy. Most construction businesses see the biggest drop in sales from Christmas to Tax Day (most likely due to money constraints created by Christmas and alleviated by tax refunds). Because of this, some roofers may discount their prices during this slow period.

Roof Replacements During the Summer

With the weather staying consistently warm, summer makes a good time for contractors to install a new roof. Not only does the summer weather provide better working conditions, but the materials and tools needed to complete the job will better function as well. More specifically, late spring to early summer is the most prime time for a roof replacement to happen. There’s less chance of rain, and it isn’t too hot yet, which makes it perfect for Reno roofing contractors to start construction on.

Reno Roof Replacement 1064 Ralston St a East Fork Roofing Reno

It’s important to keep in mind that summer is a VERY busy time for roofers because of the optimal weather conditions. This means that scheduling an appointment may be difficult and should be made early on. Also, keep the pricing in mind. Prices are going to be higher during the busier seasons, so you should account for this when you plan the best time to have your roof replaced.

Be wary of choosing a time of year where the area you live in is extremely hot. The blistering heat can affect working conditions which will consequently affect working hours. This can lead to unwanted delays. And, high temperatures can cause asphalt shingles to melt which will make them less durable, resulting in damaged pieces. Try to avoid torrid weather conditions and schedule around the hottest part of the summer season.

Roof Replacements During the Fall

If you research when is the best time to replace a roof, most results will come up as fall being the best time. As stated earlier, this is when roofing companies are the busiest. Most people are trying to prepare for the winter season and it’s common for roof repairs to be on that list of things to get done.

Fall is a great time to have your roof replaced because the temperature’s generally don’t get below 45°F or get above 85°F. There’s also very little rainfall. This allows shingles to set and seal properly without the use of special tools or techniques. The weather also lets roofers work longer days and can get the project finished faster.

It is very important to remember how busy this time of year is for roofing contractors, so you should book your roof replacement early in advance. Booking too late can result in delay and sometimes contractors are even forced to take on roofs that are in serious need of repair, forcing your replacement to be pushed back. If you are planning on having your roof replaced in the fall, you should plan it at least 2 months in advance.

Roof Replacements During the Winter

Winter is not the most convenient time to have your roof replaced, but in cases of emergency or if it’s the only time you have in your schedule to have it done, it can be done. Because of the freezing temperatures, winter can pose a lot of problems for replacing your roof. If temperatures remain below 40*F for more than a month then thermal sealing is delayed and wind damage can occur until the temperatures rise high enough for the seal to activate. Shingles need adequate heat in order to seal and set properly and in the winter this can sometimes take days or even weeks to happen. Snow, extreme cold, and sleet can also make working conditions unsafe for contractors. This may cause delays on the progress of your roofing Reno project, which is not ideal in the winter.

when is the best time to replace a roof

While you may be concerned about the quality of your roof if you decide to have it replaced in the winter, you should know this isn’t true. Most roofing Reno companies are prepared for all sorts of inclement weather.

There are some benefits to having a roof replacement done in the winter though. For instance, you won’t be competing for time slots because most people avoid such repairs in the winter. And, if you’re lucky, you could also potentially get a discount on services because most companies are pretty slow during this season.

roofing company

A roofer working on residential repair jobs.

A home wouldn’t be complete without its roof, right? And there is nothing worse than a leaky roof. It doesn’t only damage other parts of your home, it also causes you stress. In knowing the right Reno roofing company to hire to repair, fix and do your roof, you will have a peace of mind despite the problems. So, how do you sort out who is trustworthy and experienced? Below, we’ve listed helpful tips for finding and choosing the best Reno roofing company and get your money’s worth.

Insurance is the first thing to check

The roofing Reno contractor that you will choose to work for you should have a liability insurance and worker’s compensation. Before deciding to pick a roofer, ask if you can see the certificates they have. Take some time to check and call their insurance carrier to make sure that they are valid and authentic. This will avoid you from being held liable should any unwanted accidents happen. Insurance will also protect you if there will arise any issue with your roof in the future.

Choose a local Reno roofing company

It’s a good choice to choose to go local. The number one reason to choose a local roofing contractor is there easier to contact if there’ll be any problems in the future. If you're torn in deciding between a roofer with a 5-year warranty who lives so far away versus a local roofer who only offers a 2-year warranty, it’s best to choose local. It won’t do you any good if you cannot contact or track them down at the end of that time. Also, make sure that this roofing Reno company is reputable and reliable in your community before hiring them.

Quality Reno roofing company over price

Price is not everything so don’t ever decide who you hire based on how much they cost. It is understandable that you want to get a good deal on the roofing service you need, but the price shouldn’t be a determining factor for your decision. If you are looking for something cheap, they are all over the market. The problem with these cheap bids is that most of the time, you get what you pay for. If you want to have quality service and results, hire a roofing contractor based on their quality of work. Fees are high for a reason as a proper company will have proper insurance and licenses.

Don’t get attracted to door-to-door service

It may seem like a very good coincidence that some roofer came knocking at your door right when you need one. And while it may be convenient to hire them on the spot just because they “were in your neighborhood”, it’s not a very good decision to make. Steer clear of this. This is a canvassing and selling, and there is no way to know how well their workmanship is. It may be a quick fix but there is no guarantee that their work will last. Do your research before hiring a roofing company in Reno. Pick someone who has a solid background and history in this kind of work so you can get your money’s worth.

Don’t forget that communication is key

Deciding on a roofing Reno company, it’s important to remember that communication is key. Were your calls returned? Were you sent documentation when you asked for them? Did the roofer follow through? These questions should be answered with a yes. If not, then there is no proper communication here. Make sure to communicate and tell them your concerns. If it doesn’t work, it’s time to find another contractor.

Make sure to get the job details in a contract

Before paying the roofing Reno company you’ve finally chosen, get everything you’ve discussed in writing. This is to protect both you and the roofing contractor. Write down the details that both parties have agreed upon to make sure that all aspects of the job are understood. It’s suggested that you don’t make any payments until inspections are made and that the work is completed. You are the consumer here, it’s you that should be in control. Setting a clear expectation will avoid future frustrations.

Rooftop photoWhen you need a roof replacement, you want to invest in a roof that will stand up against extreme weather and will last. East Fork Roofing Reno offers unique asphalt shingles from Malarkey created with Flexor™ Technology. These particular shingles have increased flexibility, design, strength and tear-resistance compared to traditional shingles.

What is Flexor™ Technology ?

For over 30 years, Malarkey has been using SBS polymer technology to modify their asphalt roofing products. For those who are not shingle experts, you may not fully understand how Flexor Technology is created or how it benefits you. Which brings us to the question: What exactly is Flexor Technology?

To understand Flexor Technology, you must first understand the asphalt aging process. Asphalt ages due to heat, oxygen and UV rays. Asphalt shingles need a higher softening point than raw asphalt so that it can withstand the heat on a roof. Traditionally, oxidation - applying heat and oxygen- was used to increase the softening point. The issue is that the oxidation process basically ages the shingle and makes it rigid. If you were to bend it, the shingle would break and the granules would fall off.

Flexor Technology combines polymers with asphalt to raise the softening point instead of applying heat and oxygen. This means that the asphalt does not go through part of the aging process in order to create a shingle. By manipulating this step, the asphalt shingle retains the original flexibility of the raw asphalt. If you were to bend this type of shingle, it would actually bend and the granules would stay on.

Due to the increased flexibility of Flexor shingles, they can be installed in extreme temperatures. Cold weather is no longer an issue because these shingles are still flexible in temperatures as low as 0 degrees F (-18C). They also received a Class 4 impact resistance protection rating – the highest rating possible. These shingles can withstand a simulation of hailstones impacting a roof at 90 mph!

Finding the Right Shingle for Your House

Malarkey uses a variety of technologies to make their products, including Flexor™ and Nexgen™. The following is a list of shingle lines and their respective features:

The Benefits Tell the Story

Unless you live under a rock, your life has been impacted by the efforts of a volunteer.

There's just no way around it.

Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes ...from the local church youth group raising money for the homeless, to the first responders in rural communities everywhere, people are giving their time and their talents to help others.

This month, the nation takes time to honor the efforts of the amazing men, women and children, who make the world a better place through volunteering.

While a great way to celebrate National Volunteer Month is to thank every volunteer you meet, a more fulfilling way to observe this holiday is to start volunteering yourself!

Here are some of the reasons why people choose to volunteer...perhaps they’ll encourage you to volunteer too!

It reduces stress

Surprised?

You shouldn't be.

When you're focused on meeting the needs of others, any normal "worry routines" you've developed are interrupted, thus reducing your stress levels.

Volunteers report feeling more joy, optimism and control over their own situations, strengthening their immune systems and giving them a better quality of life.

It saves resources

The Corporation for National and Community Service estimates that in California, a volunteer's time is worth $26.87 per hour!

When people volunteer their time and energy it helps their local communities save money for other needed improvements. For example, when communities aren't paying someone to clean up the roadways, they can use that money towards other things, such as the community food pantry.

It provides experience

Think you'd like to make a career switch? Volunteer your time in the industry you think you'd like to be involved in, and see for yourself if it would be worth the effort to change careers.

Volunteering can also help you make connections that could make the transition to another career easier.
