Professional Roofing Contractor

The days are getting longer and the snow is starting to melt as springtime approaches in Northern Nevada. The harsh winter months may have caused some damage to your roof, so now is the perfect time to see how it held up and make some improvements. This blog will offer some insight into prepping your roof for Spring, and East Fork Roofing is here for all your Reno roofing needs!

1) Inspect

To start off, if possible, get up on your roof and see if there’s any visible damage. If it is not safe, most damage can be noticed from the ground. You’ll want to look out for broken or missing shingles, protrusions, significant shingle granules in the gutters or on the ground or anything else that looks unusual. A quick inspection can give you an idea of what you need to fix, and you can take care of those small issues before they become complicated and expensive.

2) Clean

During your inspection, you might notice some debris on the roof. A buildup of debris can cause damage and block water flow in your gutters as the Spring rain comes. Make sure your gutters are clear and remove all the tree limbs, leaves and nests. Blocked up gutters can cause stagnant water which can bring more damage and a greater possibility of mold.

3) Check the Ventilation

Another important aspect to your home is the ventilation. Moisture levels will rise in the Spring making ventilation much more important. Proper ventilation requires intake vents (usually soffit vents) and exhaust vents (the ones you see near the top of the roof). This helps ensure air is flowing through the attic and not blocking in heat and moisture. Check the intake vents, and make sure they are clear from debris. If you have an older home, keep in mind that you may need more exhaust vents than are currently on your roof. (To see a video about how ventilation works, click here.)

4) Review Important Documents

In the event where you do have a roofing problem, you’ll want to make sure you have all your insurance policies and warranties at the ready. If you’re not sure about your insurance or warranties it’s a good time to review them with an agent to ensure you have quality protection in case you do have a problem.
