Shingle bundle distortion is a fairly common occurrence that can cause shingles to not lay flat after installation. But, what causes shingle bundle distortion? Well, shingles are made of asphalt, which is a naturally malleable substance. As such, they commonly become distorted due to the way they sit while being stored and transferred. Sometimes the wood pallet that the shingle bundles sit on will affect the form and shape of the shingles themselves. Often, shingles will conform to the shape of whatever is underneath them, and if the surface isn’t completely flat, this could lead to bumps and dips in the shingles. Fortunately, most shingles will correct themselves with warmth and time.

Some shingle distortions, however, are caused by faulty installation. For instance, if the shingles are incorrectly nailed to the roof, it can permit the beneath layer to slip. This often results in uneven shingle layering and ultimately, an uneven roof.

While it isn’t recommended to install new shingles over old ones (you should always have the layers removed before installing new shingles on top), it’s still common for people to have this done due to costs and other resources. By doing this though, you run the risk of creating more problems for your roof and the new layer of shingles you plan to add to it. If the existing shingles do not lay flat, then your new layer won’t lay flat either. That’s because shingles are designed to conform to the surface beneath them. This can also prevent the new shingles from properly adhering to the existing roof layer, leaving bumps and bulges in your roof. To prevent this from happening, you should have all layers of the existing roof stripped so that the new layers can be properly installed. 

Also, be sure to use quality roofing materials. Although the cost of some shingles may seem worth it, they can be much thinner and more susceptible to damage than higher quality materials. They may also lack a sufficient amount of adhesive which can prevent the shingles from sealing adequately.
